ELECTROMYOGRAPHY (EMG) TESTING: A GUIDE FOR BETTER TREATMENT

Electromyography (EMG) is a procedure that uses an instrument called an electromyograph to convert the electrical activity of skeletal muscles into visual or auditory signals. This test is commonly used to diagnose neuromuscular abnormalities and is often utilized during biofeedback training. At Hope Neurological & Medical Services, we offer EMG testing to closely examine issues beneath the skin that may not be visibly apparent.

EMG TEST PROCESS

During an EMG, small, thin needles are inserted into the muscle to record its electrical activity. You may experience some pain and discomfort when the needles are placed. The doctor will ask you to relax the muscle and then tense it slightly. They will observe the electrical signals on a monitor, and you may also hear the signal sounds as you move the muscle. After the needles are removed, you might experience some soreness and bruising, but these symptoms should resolve within a few days. There are no long-term side effects.

PREPARATION FOR THE TEST

On the day of the test, wear loose clothing, avoid applying lotions or creams to the area being tested, and remove any jewelry. Typically, you will receive the test results on the same day.
